SMCC earns National Recognition for commitment to first-generation student success

Selected for inclusion in the FirstGen Forward Network

Summit, Mississippi (August 2025) – Southwest Mississippi Community College (SMCC) has been named one of sixty new members of the FirstGen Forward Network for 2025–26, a national recognition honoring the college’s strong commitment to supporting first-generation student success. SMCC is the first community college in Mississippi to receive this designation.

“We are extremely honored to be selected as a member of the FirstGen Forward Network,” said Brittany Gibson, Student Learning and Advising Specialist. “This honor reflects our deep commitment to supporting first-generation students. Being included in this national network connects us with other institutions who share our passion for helping students succeed, and we can’t wait to bring even more resources, opportunities, and encouragement to our campus community.”

SMCC President Dr. Steve Bishop also emphasized the importance of this achievement:
“For years, our college has invested in student success inside and outside the classroom. Our Steps to Success program and its staff are amazing resources for all of our students. This recognition is a significant achievement for our institution.”

The FirstGen Forward Network provides a three-phase framework that helps institutions improve student experiences, strengthen academic and co-curricular outcomes, and build inclusive support structures. Since its launch, 489 institutions—including two statewide systems—have joined the Network, representing 49 states and the District of Columbia.

“We are pleased to welcome Southwest Mississippi Community College into the FirstGen Forward Network,” said Dr. Stephanie J. Bannister, vice president with FirstGen Forward. “Through the application process, it was clear that SMCC is not only committed to supporting first-generation students, but also prepared to invest in long-term, strategic efforts that create environments where these students can truly thrive.”

Institutions accepted into the Network engage in professional development workshops, peer learning opportunities, and contribute to a national knowledge-sharing community. Over time, members can advance from Network Member to Network Leader and ultimately achieve Network Champion designation, based on demonstrated impact.

“Being selected as a FirstGen Forward Network Member is both an honor and a call to action,” said Dr. Kevin Kruger, interim president and CEO of FirstGen Forward. “Southwest Mississippi Community College joins a growing movement of institutions and professionals committed to advancing access, sharing best practices, and driving systemic change to ensure first-generation students succeed.”

The 2025–26 Network Members officially began their journey at the FirstGen Forward Virtual Kickoff on June 5, 2025.
