DIVISION OF ASSOCIATE DEGREE NURSING |
Dear
Perspective Student:
We
are happy to learn of your interest in our nursing program. Please complete the following application, sign
and return to our office. All students
are responsible for ensuring that all information pertaining to the admission
process and acceptance criteria are completed and in the Registrar’s office by May 15th of each year to be
considered for admission to the fall nursing course. This includes, but not limited to ACT,
A&P grades, Intermediate Algebra, and additional courses based on ACT
scores as described in the College Catalog and other admission data related to
the nursing program.
Since
admission is on a competitive basis, meeting the admission requirements does
not ensure admission to the program.
Again, thank you for your interest in our Associate Degree Nursing
Program, and we wish you the best.
ADN
Academic and Admissions Committee
Please download the application and mail to:
SMCC ADN Division
The student must apply for
regular admission and be accepted by the college.
The student must apply to the
nursing division of the college.
All students are
required to complete eleven (11) hours of college work, BIO 2511, 2513,
2521, 2523, and MAT 1233 or higher prior to entering the nursing program
and/or challenge exam for NUR 1119 with a “C” or better in each course.
An ACT composite score of
less than 15 or 18 on the Enhanced ACT (effective October 1989) will
necessitate successful completion of a minimum of fourteen (14) hours of
college work with a 2.5 grade point average before being
admitted into the nursing program. Anatomy and Physiology- BIO 2511, 2513,
2521, 2523 and Intermediate Algebra- MAT 1233, are included in the fourteen
semester hours with a “C” or better in each course.
Students are not chosen in
regard to sex, age, race, creed, ethnic origin, or marital status. The
policy extends to the qualified handicapped.
Qualified applicants are
considered in May of each year for acceptance into the nursing courses. All
prerequisite courses must be completed and admission requirements met by May for
acceptance priority.
If the applicant fails to
complete the application, is accepted and fails to enroll, or is not accepted, a
new application must be submitted, which will be considered each year on the
basis of the acceptance criteria listed below.
Criminal background checks,
including fingerprinting, may deny students access to
clinical agencies and disqualify the student participation in the program.
Students selected for admission into the ADN program must submit proof of the following items; which include, but are not limited to a current health examination, immunizations, certifications, affidavits, and other necessary requirements.
Students admitted to any nursing courses must adhere to the current catalog policies and the ADN program of study.
To be considered for acceptance into the ADN program, the
applicant’s file in the Registrar’s office must be complete. The student is responsible for ensuring
that the data in the file is correct and that it is completed by May 15th. Qualified applicants will be considered
by the admissions committee on a priority basis using the following criteria:
1.
Priority is given to:
A. In-district applicants who have taken at least two nursing
pre-requisite courses at SMCC.
B. Out-of-district applicants who have taken at least two
nursing pre-requisite courses at SMCC.
C. All other in-district applicants.
D. All other out-of-district applicants.
2. Grade point average
3. ACT composite score
4. Anatomy and Physiology grades
5. Students who are entering the nursing program for the first time.
Acceptance into the program is once a year. Enrollment in any given class is limited, and therefore selection for each class is based on available space, completion of admission requirements, and meeting the prioritized acceptance criteria. Within two weeks following written notification of the applicant’s admission status, the applicant must present the signed notification letter to the ADN Admission Committee declaring intent to enter the next scheduled class. Failure to comply with this requirement negates the applicant’s priority status and vacancies will be filled based on available class slots using the acceptance criteria.
In addition to
the college probation and suspension policy, a grade point average of “2.5” in
each course in nursing is required. A
student must maintain a “C” or better average in each nursing course, make a
minimum score of 85 on a drug calculations test in NUR 1119, 1215-1225,
2115-2125, and pass clinical testing for each nursing course in order to
continue in the program. Students must earn a "C"
or better in microbiology, BIO 2923, and BIO 2921 to progress to NUR 2115 -
2125. Clinical
testing may occur at any time during an NUR course when critical criterion has
been violated as outlined in the ADN student policy handbook. A failure in
clinical testing constitutes an “F” for that course. A student enrolled in associate degree
nursing is required to be full-time (12 semester hours) for each semester of
nursing. All student enrolled in the ADN
Program are required to earn at least seventy-two (72) semester hours.
Should
a student fail to earn a “C” or better in any nursing course, fail clinical
testing component for that nursing course, or make lower than 85 on the drug
calculation test , he or she should apply for readmission to the program no
later than one year from the last course completed. Two (2) attempts are
allowed to successfully pass the drug calculation test.
If
the student fails clinical testing or the drug calculation test, the student
will receive a grade of F for that course.
Students are eligible to repeat one nursing course the first year (NUR
1119 or NUR 1215-1225) and one course the second year (NUR 2115-2125 or NUR
2125-2225) for a total of two repeated nursing courses for the program. Each course must be repeated within one
year.
The
ADN faculty believes that the nursing profession is a client-centered, helping
relationship, the goals of which are conservation of health and support of the
client’s ability to meet his / her needs; therefore, the nursing faculty
reserves the right to admit and retain only those students who demonstrate
physiological and psychological evidence of performing safe acts of nursing.
Students are allowed one withdrawal per nursing course. Readmission is considered on a competitive basis and space availability for that course.
Meet admission criteria for
SMCC and the ADN Division (same requirements as for regular students).
Complete all courses of anatomy
and physiology (BIO 2511/2513, BIO 2521/2523, MAT 1233) with a "C" or better in
each course.
Make 77 or above on the
examination for the semester of advanced placement. Two (2) attempts are
allowed to successfully pass the challenge examination.

calculations test for the semester of advanced placement. Two (2) attempts are
allowed to successfully pass the drug calculations test.
Pass clinical testing for NUR
1119. Two (2) attempts are allowed to successfully pass clinical testing.

of the specific restrictions and may be subject to requirements set forth by the
college and board of nursing.

year as an LPN within the last three (3) years.
Submit a vocational transcript
and a letter of recommendation.

items, which include, but are not limited to, a current health examination,

Criminal background checks may deny students access to clinical agencies and
disqualify the students' participation in the program.
An advanced placement policy is available on request.
The challenge examination may be administered to the same applicant at an interval of four (4) weeks. Nursing 1119 must be successfully challenged between August 30th - November 1st and January 30th - May 31st of each school year. Upon successful completion of the challenge exam, the student may apply for the succeeding nursing course within the following academic year.
